My interest in the story had been sparked by my discovery that two of the cabin boys on the vessel were lovers. They’d grown up together in a small village just outside Amsterdam. After puberty they’d started playing with each other and had graduated to full-on fucking before they’d enlisted as cabin boys on the Batavia. Gay sex was not only against the law at that time in Holland, it was a hanging offence. I imagined that the two boys, Henrik and Wouter, apart from wanting to see the mysterious Far East, signed on so that they could be together without risking the hangman’s rope.
