The Gray Lady is the ghost that haunts Field Place, the home of Richard and Louisa, when the house is in danger, which the children believe it is: their parents are talking of selling it. When their cousin George comes to visit, he scorns the idea of a ghost, but he has a deadly fear of snakes, which are plentiful around Field Place. It takes several adventurous nights teach the children the line between real and imagined danger.
